JPEG uses progressive encoding with optimized quant tables — the low-res outline loads first, then detail sharpens progressively; combined with quantization tuned to human visual sensitivity, files are smaller at equal quality and load perceptually faster. PNG is optimized losslessly — compression parameters and filtering are recomputed so not a single pixel is lost while the file shrinks noticeably, ideal for transparency or pixel-perfect output. AVIF is based on AV1 video coding technology and compresses still images with intra-frame coding: about 50% smaller than JPEG and 20-30% smaller than WebP at the same quality, making it one of the best choices for modern web images. What is AVIF?
AVIF is a next-generation image format based on AV1 video coding technology, far more efficient than JPEG and WebP. Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+) preview and use it natively.
Does PNG optimization lose quality?
No. PNG optimization is lossless: only the compression algorithm and parameters are re-optimized — every pixel is preserved, while the file gets noticeably smaller.
