How Face Restoration Works
Face restoration relies on a technique called face prior reconstruction. Deep learning models are trained on massive datasets of high-resolution face photographs, so they learn the statistical distribution of facial structure and texture — how eyes, noses, mouths and skin should look under typical lighting. When you upload a blurry, low-resolution or damaged portrait, the network first detects the face and analyzes what remains of its features. It then searches its learned face prior for the most plausible high-resolution version of that face, generating realistic details such as sharp eyes, clean skin texture and natural edges that are missing in the original. Crucially, the result is not drawn from scratch: the generated detail is aligned with the geometry of your original face and blended back into the image, so the person's own facial features and identity are preserved. This combination — generating plausible detail from learned knowledge, then fusing it with the original pixels — is what allows the tool to sharpen old, blurry or damaged photos without inventing a different face.
Who It's For
Face restoration is especially useful for old photographs, where faces are often small, blurry or faded. You can restore faces in old photos of grandparents and great-grandparents, bringing long-gone relatives into sharp focus for family archives. Low-resolution group photos — class reunions, weddings, team portraits — benefit most: each face can be enlarged and rebuilt with clearer detail while the rest of the image stays untouched. Dated identification photos, such as passport or ID pictures from decades ago, can be cleaned up for archives or personal use. Family photo collections scanned from paper albums, video stills with small faces, and smartphone photos that are too dark or out of focus are all good candidates. Everything runs automatically with no sign-up: upload the image, wait a few seconds, and download the restored portrait.
FAQ
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free. No sign-up, no usage limits.
Which image formats are supported?
PNG, JPG, JPEG and WEBP, up to 40MB per file.
What photos is it good for?
Old photos with blurry, low-resolution or noisy faces — AI rebuilds facial details to make them clearer. Backgrounds and clothing stay untouched.
Will it change how I look?
AI reconstructs details from a facial prior, so it is an informed guess: faces usually come out sharper, but fine details may differ from reality. Not recommended for identification purposes.
What is the output format?
A restored PNG image, ready to download.
How long does processing take?
Usually 5-15 seconds per image; large images are auto-shrunk to a reasonable size first.
Is my file stored?
No. Images are automatically deleted within 24 hours after processing.
Can I close the page after uploading?
Yes. The task is saved in your browser and results stay available for 24 hours (only the latest task is kept; avoid incognito mode or clearing browser cache).
