How AI Photo Colorization Works

To colorize black and white photos, AI uses a deep learning technique called conditional generation. The model first performs semantic understanding of the grayscale image: it recognizes objects and regions such as sky, skin, grass, clothing, and water, much the way a human reads a scene. Each of these regions has a learned prior — we rarely see green skies or blue grass — so the network combines what it knows about typical colors with the visual context of the surrounding pixels to predict natural shades for every area. Training on massive datasets of real color photographs teaches the model the color statistics of the world, from warm sunset tones to the muted fabrics of old clothing. A final generative adversarial network (GAN) stage polishes the result: a discriminator judges whether the output resembles an authentic color photo, and the generator keeps refining until the overall palette looks realistic, coherent, and free of unnatural tints or color casts. The result is a full-color version of your image that respects the original composition while making it feel alive again.

Who It's For

Colorizing old photos brings history back to life in everyday situations. Family archives are the most common use: scan faded prints of grandparents, childhood snapshots, or wedding photos from decades ago and give them fresh, natural color that younger generations can appreciate. Educators, historians, and content creators can colorize historical black-and-white photographs and press images to make past events feel immediate and relatable. Filmmakers and designers apply the same technique to vintage movie stills and archival illustrations, producing visuals that sit naturally beside modern work. Hobbyists enjoy crafting nostalgic pieces — warm, timeless versions of old photos for posters, albums, or social media. Everything runs online with no software to install, and since no account is required you can colorize black and white photos in seconds, right from your browser.

FAQ

Yes, completely free with no sign-up and no usage limits.

Which image formats are supported?

PNG, JPG, JPEG and WEBP, up to 40MB per file. Both black-and-white and color photos work (color photos get re-colorized).

How good is the colorization?

An AI colorization model based on learnable color queries: it automatically gives old photos natural, vivid colors. Colorization is AI-generated, so shades may differ from the original.

What is the output format?

A colorized PNG image, ready to download.

How long does processing take?

Usually 5-15 seconds per image; large images are auto-shrunk to a reasonable size first.

Is my file stored?

No. Images are automatically deleted within 24 hours after processing.

Can I close the page after uploading?

Yes. Your task is saved in this browser automatically — come back within 24 hours to see the results (only the latest task is kept; do not use private browsing or clear your browser cache).
