How Online Audio Stem Separation Works
Stem separation is powered by deep learning. The audio is first converted into a spectrogram — a two-dimensional representation with time on the horizontal axis and frequency on the vertical axis — that preserves pitch and loudness. A U-shaped encoder-decoder network then analyzes this representation at multiple scales, learning the frequency fingerprints of each instrument and of vocals, and generates a separate mask for every stem (vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, etc.). Applying each mask back to the original spectrogram and inverting the transform reconstructs clean, isolated tracks without audible bleed from the other parts. The same model also handles tempo and key variation across genres, so pop, rock, hip-hop and acoustic recordings are all processed consistently. Everything runs automatically on our servers: upload your file, and in a few minutes you can preview and download each stem.
